The largest number of students (128 thousand) in the history of the country was enrolled in 2006-2007. In 2019, their number dropped sharply to 56 thousand and over the past two years this figure has been 59.6 thousand.
According to the expert on economic policy of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” (IDIS) V. Ionita, there are two main factors that contributed to the sharp reduction in the number of young students in 13 years: “The first factor is the decrease in the number of births in Moldova0. there were 424 thousand young people (19-24 years old) in the country in 2010, now it is about 245 thousand. It is expected that by 2025 their number will decrease to 220 thousand.
The second factor is the outflow of young people (19-24 years old) abroad. According to the fact, approximately 4.5 thousand young people leave the country every year”.
