According to the analysis of the Institute for Research of the Youth Problems and Training Prospective Personnel, there are more than half a million children and young people with disabilities in Germany, 25% of whom study in secondary schools, and the remaining 75% in special boarding schools.
There are 13 types of special (correctional) educational institutions in the country. However, these schools do not work satisfactorily, and almost 80% of students drop out. Thus, the German education system is gradually shifting towards inclusive education so that children with special needs can be educated alongside their healthy peers.
